Delfine Persoon will appeal her controversial loss to Katie Taylor in Saturday’s thrilling title bout in New York.

Ireland’s Taylor unified the lightweight division with a majority decision win, taking Persoon’s WBO title and adding it to her WBA, WBC and IBF world titles.

Judges scored the fight 95-95, 96-94, 96-94 in her favour – a result widely criticised.

34-year-old police woman Persoon immediately left the ring in disgust following the announcement of the decision and insists she had done enough to hand Taylor the first defeat of her professional career.

“In my eyes, it is not a defeat,” Persoon said. “What we will do now is of course make a complaint – but without much hope because the weight of Belgian boxing does not weigh heavy.”

“She added: “We were prevented from writing a beautiful page in the history of boxing.”

Taylor’s promoter Eddie Hearn believes Taylor will welcome the opportunity of a rematch “to set the record straight.”

Meanwhile, plans are afoot to erect a statue in honour of the Olympian in her hometown of Bray in Co. Wicklow.
