Dele winds up Granit Xhaka as what Everton fans did after Arsenal return spotted

Squad togetherness

The feeling of Everton's unity has reverberated around all aspects of the club over the last few weeks. Many have rightly pointed out that it played a huge part in the Blues managing to survive relegation in dramatic fashion in the penultimate game of the season.

Frank Lampard has tapped into those messages of positivity from the fans, but has also urged his squad to band together in these times as well. Against Arsenal, despite Everton's season effectively being over thanks to their exploits on Thursday evening, that was still evident as the players got off the team coach.

Nathan Patterson and Ben Godfrey travelled with their team-mates despite both carrying injuries that would rule them out of involvement in the match itself. Jordan Pickford was also not involved, but was seen getting off the team bus and was in attendance to support the rest of the squad.

Keeping that sense of togetherness is something that Evertonians have been desperate to uphold in the business end of the campaign, and that's something that needs to be maintained when the club reconvenes for the 2022/23 term as well.

Arsenal fans sing for club legend
In the early minutes of the game one chant was prominent from the Arsenal supporters. On several occasions they appeared to break into chants of 'Vieira'.

While Patrick Vieira is one of their club legends the song was likely inspired less by his heroics for the Gunners and more by the events at Goodison Park on Thursday, when the now Crystal Palace boss was involved in an incident on the pitch with an Everton supporter during the post-match celebrations.

Dele wind up

What came as no surprise to anyone in the Emirates was the ire directed towards Dele Alli. The midfielder earned his first start for the Blues after his second-half heroics proved crucial in sparking the comeback that guaranteed the club's survival.

Until January he was a Tottenham Hotspur player and, after the home fans quickly realised Norwich City would give them no reason to celebrate, they maintained a chorus of boos for Alli every time he touched the ball.

But, even after all that, the England international was clearly keen to give some back, too. After attempting to shield the ball out for a goal kick in the first half, it turned out there wasn't enough power on the rolling ball and Granit Xhaka was able to knock it against the Everton man to instead win a corner.

As the pair walked into the box to get into position for the set-piece, they could be seen exchanging words, with Dele having a quite large smile etched on his face. The Switzerland international, meanwhile, was pretty angry despite his side winning the match at the time.

Perhaps the Everton man was saying something about the Gunners' Champions League hopes, as his former club Spurs romped to victory away to Norwich to confirm their place in Europe's elite competition.

Hearts and minds beyond north London

It was clear from the beginning both Arsenal and Everton supporters had their attention on games beyond the one being played out at the Emirates. Some of the away fans' biggest celebrations came when news filtered through Wolves had taken the lead at Anfield, and then when it emerged Manchester City had come from behind to take the lead against Aston Villa.

Meanwhile, the home fans needed a Tottenham defeat to create an opportunity for them to take fourth. But they fell silent when Spurs went ahead at Norwich.

Lime Street party continues

Getting off the train both on the way to the game and coming home late at night was quite the experience. It was as if the party had continued for a good 12 hours and beyond for supporters.

Disembarking at Euston, Evertonians were met with a number of other groups of fans. Notably, there were Wrexham supporters on their way to Wembley in very high spirits ahead of their FA Trophy final against Bromley, and they had something of a contest to see who could sing louder between themselves and the Blues.

And, despite what was a long, long day for a round trip to north London, Everton fans were still in extremely high spirits when they got off the train in the city again. They loudly sang Spirit Of The Blues as they spilled out of Lime Street train station and into Liverpool at around 10:45pm, making sure the party atmosphere right the way through to the end.
