Dele Alli’s sensational form under Jose Mourinho continued as he scored a wonder goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford – though for a moment it looked as if VAR might deny him.
Tottenham had been poor as United dominated much of the first half on Mourinho’s return to the club he left a year ago, and led through Marcus Rashford.
But out of nothing, a moment of brilliance from Dele, who has now scored four times in as many games since the Portuguese replaced Mauricio Pochettino in the Spurs dugout, made sure his side went in level.
Jan Vertonghen’s cross was only half-cleared, but when Serge Aurier turned it back into the danger area, Dele still had an awful lot to do.
He did it in emphatic style, cushioning out of the air with a magical touch that lifted the ball over Fred, before finishing smartly past David de Gea from the angle.
Controversy threatened as a lengthy VAR check sought to establish whether the goal might be ruled out for handball, but replays did not clearly show whether the ball had brushed Dele's upper arm or shoulder, or possibly missed it all together, and the effort was allowed to stand.
