Former Tottenham goalkeeper Michel Vorm says he can understand why Jose Mourinho is omitting Dele Alli.
Alli has struggled for game time this season, starting just once in the Premier League to date with Mourinho leaving the England international out of his last five matchday squads.
Mourinho's selections have been justified by his side's performances so far this season, Spurs currently sitting top of the Premier League table, goal difference ahead of reigning champions Liverpool.
And former Tottenham goalkeeper Vorm has also defended Mourinho over the Alli situation, pointing to the increased competition at the club following a busy summer in the transfer window.
“It’s a difficult one. Dele showed that he is an amazing player, but sometimes you have a difficult time, a difficult spell," Vorm, who left the club in the summer, told TalkSPORT.
“The thing is now it is very competitive up front and in midfield, so he needs to make choices.
“The times that he gets a chance, it’s difficult for Dele to get in the team.
"You can see he doesn’t have the time to convince the manager at this point, but everyone knows that he has still got the quality but Mourinho needs to make choices, you know, and the choices are now much more than before, so that makes it even harder for Dele to get into the team.”
Alli has been linked with a move away amid his lack of play time with PSG tipped to make a move last summer.
Nothing materialised in the summer transfer window though and his minutes on the pitch have not increased so far in the 2020/21 campaign.
The 24-year-old is still under contract with Tottenham until 2024, but something may have to give if Mourinho continues to omit the once lauded midfielder.
