Dele Alli discusses why he took penalty at Wolves instead of Son Heung-min and new midfield role

Dele Alli is off the mark for the 2021/22 season after scoring the winner in Tottenham's 1-0 win over Wolves on Sunday.

Once again lining up in his new role as part of Nuno Espirito Santo's midfield three, the 25-year-old made one of his trademark runs in the ninth minute and was brought down in the box by Jose Sa after getting on the end of Sergio Reguilon's perfect through ball.

Dusting himself down and stepping up from 12 yards, Alli confidently sent the shot-stopper the wrong way from the spot to give his side a crucial advantage.

With Harry Kane on the bench on his return to the squad for the first time this season, it was the attacking midfielder who took the penalty despite many believing that Son Heung-min would be on spot kick duty after netting one in Spurs' win over Southampton back in April.

Asked by Spurs TV after the game about why he was the one to take the penalty instead of Son, Alli revealed the reason behind the decision.

"It's a discussion we have and the manager chose who takes it. That's the way it is," he explained.

"We're both very confident, we have a lot of players that are very confident at taking them.

"When we won the penalty I went to step up, wanted to take it and happy I scored."

Now playing in more of a box-to-box role after a change in system at Tottenham, Alli is also more than doing his bit defensively for the team.

This was evident in the closing stages of the win at Molineux as he threw himself at the ball to stop Francisco Trincao's fierce volley from reaching Hugo Lloris.

Perhaps different to what he was previously used to when playing at No.10, the ex-MK Dons man is enjoying his new role in the team under Espirito Santo.

"I'm happy, again there's a lot I need to work on. It's been a different role for me so far, a lot of working hard and defending and fighting for the team. That's what I like to do as well," he said.

"It's been a good start but got to keep improving."

Tottenham's win at Molineux means they now have a 100 per cent record in the Premier League in 2021/22 following their opening day victory over Man City.

A very promising start for the team amid previous doubts following a summer of uncertainty, Alli feels everything is coming together but admits that plenty more has to be worked on.

"We've seen it in previous game we've had here as it's a very difficult place to come. Their fans are great, the team play very good football and they made it hard for us and they always do," stated the Spurs ace.

"We had to show a lot of fight, and I think we've showed it since the start of pre-season.

"We've been building and working well together. There's a lot of positives to take but things we need to work on.

"It's still early in the season and we know it wasn't going to be a perfect performance but we're happy win the win."
