M66 shut after after burst water main floods the motorway

A burst water main has shut the M66.

The A56 southbound carriageway to the M66 Junction 1 has been shut due to flooding. Traffic officers have warned people to avoid the area.

"Traffic Officers are currently at scene, If planning travel, avoid the area," Highways England said.

Traffic was leaving the road to the north at the point where it changes from the A56 to the M66 in Edenfield in order to avoid the motorway but a subsequent crash has caused further delays on that road.

Police traffic officers and a team from the North West Motorway Police were called to the scene of the water main burst, which happened at around 3.30pm.

The carriageway had become partially flooded but the flooding has now worsened, causing the southbound closure.

Maintenance crews have also been called to the scene to repair the problem.
