Delays on M6 near Wigan as car fire leaves driver 'shaken'

Drivers are facing queues of more than six miles this afternoon after a car fire on the M6 southbound near Wigan which left a motorist 'shaken'.

Firefighters and traffic officers are on the scene between junctions 27 at Standish and 26 for the Orrell interchange.

Two lanes were closed approaching the fire from around 2pm today (November 14), with one lane since reopening.

Traffic is queuing back to Charnock Richard service station, more than six miles away, according to the Inrix traffic monitoring system.

North West Motorway Police first reported the fire shortly after 2.05pm.

In a post on Twitter, a spokesperson for North West Motorway Police said: "We are taking a report of a car on fire on the M6 junction 27 to junction 26 southbound.

"Merseyside traffic and highways are making to the scene.

"Matrix set."

A further Tweet from North West Motorway Police said the fire had left the car's driver 'shaken', but thankfully not injured.

It said: "Police, fire and highways are now on scene at the vehicle fire on the M6 junction 27 to junction 26 southbound.

"The vehicle is on the hard shoulder whilst fire continue to work at the scene with a lane one closure in place.

"The driver has been spoken to and although shaken up, no injuries reported."
