Delays on Ashton line after crash between tram and taxi at New Islington

There are delays on the Ashton line after a tram collided with a taxi near New Islington.

Services have been stopped between Clayton and Piccadilly following the crash, which happened at around 6.30pm on Sunday night (February 16).

Pictures show a tram bound for Media City stopped just outside the tram stop for New Islington.

A white taxi has stopped next to the tram tracks.

There are not believed to be any serious injuries.

An eye witness said the tram had been travelling at speed when he heard a bang from his building.

He told the M.E.N the crash didn't look too 'severe.'

Metrolink engineers are currently in attendance.

A spokesperson for Metrolink said: "Due to a road traffic accident, services on the Ashton line are operating between Ashton and Clayton only.

"There are no services between Clayton and Piccadilly.

"Tickets and passes are being accepted on the 216 and 217 bus service."
