Delays of 75 minutes on M5 after massive oil spill causes gridlock

There have been delays of 75 minutes on the northbound carriageway of the M5 today (September 1).

Cooking oil was spilt on the road after a two-car crash which triggered a large clean-up operation.

The crash and resulting oil spill happened on J24 Huntsworth to J23 Bridgwater at around 5.20am.

Highways England had warned of long delays and said it was "unsafe" to reopen the lanes earlier due to the cooking oil.

In an update they have said normal traffic conditions are expected at around 3pm today but all lanes have since reopened as of 11.45am.

The alert reads: "There are long delays of at least 75 minutes and 7 miles of congestion on the M5 northbound approaching lane restrictions between J24 Huntworth and J23 Bridgwater.

"Service providers are on scene treating the spillage.

"Road users are advised to expect disruption and allow additional time for their journey."
