South Lanarkshire councillors have voiced concern over delays to school redevelopments.
Work at St Mark’s Primary school in Hamilton and Newton Farm Primary school in Cambuslang was a topic of discussion at the financial resources scrutiny forum on Thursday (December 10).
Progress on a classroom and nursery extension at St Mark’s is behind schedule due to delaying issues obtaining the steelwork needed for the project.
Councillor Mary Donnelly for Hamilton West and Earnock spoke about the impact of the delay on the school.
She said: “I’m very close to St Mark’s, and I did ask a question to the officer to see if he could advise me when the deadline is going to be for St Marks
“It has had an impact, parking for parents can’t take place at the moment, there’s been quite an upheaval there for St Mark’s.
“It’s just to be mindful of that.”
It was confirmed at the meeting that the work is due to finish in June next year, with efforts being made to ensure that goal is achievable.
Work on Newton Farm primary school’s extension is three weeks behind, which is also due to a delay in getting steelwork for the project.
Cambuslang East councillor Walter Brogan commented on the problems that have arisen due to the work.
He said: “There are quite a few issues there and I have highlighted this before, the parking round about the school is causing absolute chaos for pupils getting in and out of school.
“Recently I’ve had a number of emails saying that it is causing problems,
"I don’t know if the contractors have got a plan to work with in terms of parking.
“The parking around the site is a major issue.”
At the meeting, it was stated that the issue of parking will be looked at and the project team will focus on providing as much space as possible for parking.
Other facilities that are facing development issues include Skylark Nursery at Robert Smillie Memorial Primary School in Larkhall who are experiencing material shortages, it is hoped that by reviewing the design and using different materials, the delay will be reduced.
