Delays expected as traffic lights replaced on roundabout after existing ones not fit for purpose

Two weeks of work to replace the traffic lights on a busy commuter roundabout in the north of the city starts tomorrow (Saturday).

The lights at the Abbey Wood roundabout in Filton were installed in 1994 and are considered no longer fit for purpose.

South Gloucestershire Council has decided to carry out the work now because it has received funding from central government to replace the signals.

Preparatory work has been carried out over the past few weeks and motorists may have noticed some lane closures in place.

The authority has said that to avoid closing the roundabout completely, the remainder of the work will be carried out in two phases.

The first phase, which takes place from Saturday (July 6) until Wednesday, July 10, will see the lights replaced on the south eastern side of the roundabout - University of the West of England and Ministry of Defence.

Temporary traffic lights will be in place during the work and they will be manually operated during the morning and evening rush hour.

The second phase, which carries on from Wednesday until Sunday, July 14, will see the remaining traffic signals on the north west arm - from Filton - replaced along with the existing traffic signal controller.

Temporary lights will be in operation on this side of the roundabout in addition to those on the south eastern side.

South Gloucestershire Council has apologised for any inconvenience this work may cause and has said it is doing everything to complete the work as quickly as possible.

“We aim to do this work with minimal disruption, however, the roundabout is a very busy junction and this scheme will inevitably cause delays,” added the authority.
