Delays and reports of passengers 'stranded' at Piccadilly following a fire on train at Brinnington

A fire on board a train is causing widespread disruption to services tonight.

There have been reports of passengers being stranded at Manchester Piccadilly railway station as a result.

Northern reported the blaze broke out on a line in Brinnington, between Ashburys railway station in Openshaw and Romiley, Stockport.

As a result, trains running through the stations are expected to be delayed or diverted.

Passengers are being urged to listen for announcements on platforms and customer information screens.

Northern said trains between Ashburys and Romiley were unable to run in either direction.

Replacement buses are being organised.

Northern said the first service affected was the 7.19pm train from Piccadilly to New Mills Central.

The buses were due to start running from 9pm.

Northern added: "Services from Manchester Piccadilly to New Mills Central/Sheffield will run via a diversion and will not call at Ashburys, Ryder Brow, Reddish North, Brinnington and Bredbury in both directions until further notice."

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for comment.
