Delays after train hits armchair left on the track

Passengers travelling to Bristol faced delays earlier after their train hit an 'armchair' that had been left on the track.

The Cross Country service from Cheltenham struck the furniture just before Yate around 3.40pm this afternoon.

The train was held for about 25 minutes while the objects were removed.

But passengers on board did not appear to get too annoyed by the delay once they realised what had happened.

Passenger Craig Jones said: "An announcement made over the tannoy said: 'sincere apologies for the delay near Yate. The train collided with an armchair and one got stuck under the train which meant it stopped abruptly'.

"The train then started moving after a delay of around 25 minutes, before stopping again shortly after."

Craig added: "Another announcement came over the tannoy that said 'Don't be alarmed everyone we haven't hit more furniture we are just out of our slot'. Cue lots of laughter."

Some other services on the line are also expected to be delayed as a result of the incident.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: "At approximately 3.38pm this afternoon it was reported that a train struck objects on the line, believed to be chairs, on the approach to Yate.

“The train was temporarily delayed while the objects were safely removed from the line, and proceeded into Yate at 4.05pm after the line was cleared.”
