Delayed extension of Metro corridor making it non-viable

JAIPUR: Despite spending crores of rupees on the detailed project report (DPR), the project to decongest Walled City after extending the Jaipur Metro (east-west) corridor from Badi Chaupar to Transport Nagar is gathering dust.

As the project slips on the state government’s priority list, the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) hasn’t moved an inch forward.

A official source said, “The extension of Jaipur Metro network is the slowest in the country in comparison to the other states. The project will only become viable if extension happens at regular intervals and city is linked with the Metro.”

According to the DPR, the estimated project cost was Rs 856 crore, including the cost of land and taxes, if the project is completed by March 2025. Out of the the total length of 2.85km, 2.26 km will be underground and 0.59km will be elevated.

Under the extension, the JMRC had proposed two stations. The underground station is proposed at Ramganj Chaupar and the elevated station will be at Transport Nagar.

Once constructed, the estimated ridership between the entire stretch from Mansarovar to Transport Nagar will be over 1.38 lakh till 2031. An official source at JMRC said, “It would decongest the entire Walled City area, if proper planning is carried out. In coming years the project will be need of the hour.”
