Dejan Lovren explains why Liverpool equipped to handle Premier League title race pressure this season

Dejan Lovren believes Liverpool's experience of handling last season's pressure gives them the ability to effectively deal with it again in the hunt for silverware.

The Reds won their final nine Premier League games last term to finish runners-up to Manchester City with 97 points before lifting the club's sixth European Cup in Madrid in three weeks later with a 2-0 win over Tottenham.

With the tension turned up several notches in the final two months of the campaign, the Reds refused to yield as they recorded their highest points tally of the Premier League era to push champions City into the final few minutes of the season in the race for the title.

Lovren feels the expectation that came with those big games in the closing months means this year's push for honours is nothing new for the squad as they continue to stake a serious claim for the Reds' first league title in three decades.

In fact, the Croatian centre-back believes that pressure will be benefit Jurgen Klopp and his players as they aim to build on a run that has seen them win 11 of their 12 games so far.

Lovren said: "I think we've definitely learned from all the year before and what kind of pressure we can deal with. We are used to it and we did it last year.

"I think one of the big things is not to think too far ahead. It's a long season with so many games to play. We always just go game-to-game and I think that is important."

Lovren is enjoying something of a renaissance at present at the heart of Liverpool's defence, having started four of the last five matches alongside Virgil van Dijk, including Sunday's huge 3-1 win over Manchester City.

And with Joel Matip still sidelined with a knee problem, Lovren is hopeful of adding to his appearance tally as the Reds get set for a hectic two months after the international break where they could play as many as 10 times before January 3.

"It is unfortunate for Joel to be missing at the moment but injuries are a part of football," Lovren added. "I have had many conversations with the manager and I have been working hard behind the scenes.

"I am sure there will be many changes between now and the end of the season. I think there are another 50 games in front of us when we look at all the competitions that we have.

"So there are many games to play and, for sure, we will require all the squad to be ready to come in and compete when needed."
