Dejan Ljubicic claims he turned down a move to Rangers earlier this summer

Dejan Ljubicic has claimed Rangers made an offer to bring him to Ibrox this summer, only for him to opt for a move to Germany instead.

The 23-year-old established himself as a key player for his previous club Rapid Vienna, and even managed to find the net against Steven Gerrard 's side in a Europa League tie in December 2018.

And it seems Ljubicic made a pretty strong impression on the Gers hierarchy with the Premiership champions allegedly trying to orchestrate a transfer to Scotland.

In the end, the playmaker signed for Bundesliga side FC Koln, despite the fact Cologne narrowly avoided relegation by winning the play-offs against Holstein Kiel in May, but the Austrian Under-21 star explained: "I had offers from several clubs in Germany and I was also in Italy for negotiations and Glasgow Rangers wanted me too.

"I decided on Cologne early on, but I admit I was worried when they had to win their relegation play-offs.

"My family and I decided immediately Cologne was the place for me because I will definitely get a start there too.

"And I need to play games because I want to play for Austria.

"Everyone wants to play for their country. I hope my performances in Cologne will convince manager Franco Foda to pick me for the World Cup qualifiers."

Gerrard has already recruited midfielder John Lundstram and striker Fashion Sakala as Rangers attempt to qualify for the Champions League group stages for the first time since 2008.
