Deja vu for Kieran Sadlier as he hopes to join peno king Gavin Bazunu in Ireland squad

It was half-time in Faro by the time Kieran Sadlier got home from Rotherham training to see Gavin Bazunu's penalty save against Ronaldo.

As he watched, he noticed he was getting tagged on Twitter. "The penalty was quite similar to mine, to be fair," he laughed.

In July 2018, Sadlier stepped up to take a penalty for Cork City against Shamrock Rovers and the then 16-year-old Bazunu dived to his right to save.

Almost a carbon copy of his 15th minute spot-kick save in Ireland's 2-1 defeat to Portugal.

"I was on social media at half-time, laughing at some of the comments," Sadlier told MirrorSport. "I do remember that penalty.

"I'd played with Greg Bolger at Cork. He was with Rovers that day and told Gavin where I was going to put it.

"I varied my penalty kicks after that."

Bolger and Sadlier remain friends. As the 26-year-old recalls it, maybe it was a sliding door moment for both himself and Bazunu, who was promoted to the Hoops line-up weeks before and was excellent in the scoreless draw.

"Man City were watching him that day," said Sadlier. It was weird. Sheffield United were watching me as well!

"Gavin was the one who got the move - but it was one of those games were nothing was going past him.

"He's a class keeper and is now number one for Ireland. I'm sure he's buzzing after his penalty save, despite his disappointment with the result."

They haven't met since but could go head to head on October 16 when Doncaster host Portsmouth - where Bazunu is on loan - in League One.

"And I'm still the penalty taker, so that's probably going to happen now," joked Sadlier. "I know players who were with him at Rochdale last year, they say he's a proper keeper.

"George Hearst, who was with us last year, is on loan at Portsmouth and said he's just what you'd expect for a keeper from Man City."

Sadlier's target is to join Bazunu, and his own former West Ham colleagues Josh Cullen and Seanie Maguire, in an Ireland squad.

At one stage, Stephen Kenny had tried to sign him for Dundalk while he was at Cork.

Last season was a near write-off for the winger, who missed four months with a syndesmosis ligament injury and ripped the deltoid muscle off the ankle bone.

"It was frustrating and took months to settle down, it was my first bad injury and hopefully my last," he said.

"What I did at Doncaster, with getting chances and putting them away and getting into double figures for goals, I was hoping for that last season but the injury didn't help, obviously and I was in and out of the team.

"Hopefully I'll be firing on all cylinders soon. With Stephen picking Ronan (Curtis), Troy (Parrott) and Gavin - and Chiedozie (Ogbene) would have been there too - it shows League One is strong and I know if I can play regularly, I can get into that squad.

"They were so unlucky in Portugal but Stephen has the team playing a good brand, I'd love to be a part of it."
