Deirdre O'Kane hoping for second chance at chat show saying she felt sorry for guests without audience

Deirdre O'Kane is hoping RTE gives her a second chance at her chat show when audiences are allowed back in the studio.

The comic and TV presenter shot to the chat show scene last month with her very own Saturday night gig Deirdre O'Kane Talks Funny.

However, the Louth born funny woman, 52, who is used to bouncing off an audience reaction said she felt the effects of the radio silence, and told she even felt sorry for her guests involved.

She said: “Once I got going on a conversation with a guest, it was fine.

“It was intense and we were very focused on each other, so that had advantages.

“But the disadvantage for me of no laughter was no thinking time,” she told Kathryn Thomas, who was filling in for Ray D’Arcy on RTE Radio 1 on Tuesday.

“Sometimes that laughter just gives you a few seconds to just think about what you want to ask yet.

“Make a nice sentence for yourself. And also, I just really felt for the guests.

“They normally enter a studio to a round of applause and reaction so bringing them into an empty, very quiet room was tough.

“So I hope they give me a go at it again where I have an audience.

“I’d like to see what that is like.”

Despite cancelled tours, gigs and the postponement of her Sky show, the Gogglebox voiceover star said she’s excited to celebrate ringing in the new year.

The host, who is teaming up with Kathryn Thomas for RTE’s NYE Countdown Show said:

“Look we have to mark this year for better or worse, it’s New Year’s Eve.

“And good things happened, and I am an optimist and positive person at my core.

“So, despite all the horrors, and the bad and sad stuff that is going on, we all know that good things came out of this as well and the world will change of it, so let's mark that.”
