The 2019 New England Patriots defense is extremely impressive.
Statistically, they’ve proven this over the last four games, which includes the Super Bowl. They’ve allowed a total of six points and they only allowed the New York Jets to gain 105 total yards of offense during their 30-14 victory on Sunday. The 14 points came from a muffed punt and a pick-six by the rookie quarterback Jarrett Stidham.
New England held the Los Angeles Rams to three points in Super Bowl LIII and they held the Pittsburgh Steelers to three points in the season opener. They’ve recorded two consecutive shutouts against the Miami Dolphins and Jets.
They lead the NFL so far in fewest passing yards per game (162.3), rushing yards per game (36.7), total yards per game (199) and points per game (5.7) — and they’re tied for most sacks per game (4.3). This is pure dominance, and it’s reminiscent of the Patriots’ defensive units in the early-2000’s.
Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders took notice of this, and spoke about the significance of having a defensive unit that’s this good.
“These guys only gave up 105 yards today,” Sanders said. ” You know how good you are when you only relinquish 105 yards to opposing team’s entire offense that has Le’Veon Bell at running back? Unbelievable.”
We talk so much about this offense, but we’re forgetting about this defense. When this defense has performed like this in the past, they’ve won Super Bowls. I mean Super Bowls, plural. And these guys are playing lights out. I have never seen them at this level defensively, no one has scored.”
The Patriots have outscored opponents 119 to 20 points in the last four games and their offense is playing at a level that hasn’t been seen in some years. This team has came out ready to play in 2019, and the 42 year old quarterback is en route to another Super Bowl appearance.
