'Defying expectations' - Bristol City boss Lee Johnson nominated for managers' award after fine Championship start

Since they were well beaten by Leeds United on the opening day of the season, Bristol City have not looked back - and their impressive form has not gone unnoticed.

With his side sitting pretty in fifth place in the Championship table and on an unbeaten run stretching back to the second match of the season, Lee Johnson has been nominated for manager of the month.

The head coach has guided the Robins to 11 points from their opening six games, including impressive away wins at Derby County and Hull City as well as a home victory over Queens Park Rangers.

He will be hoping to get back to winning ways against Stoke City on Saturday having seen his side held by Middlesbrough before the international break, with Tommy Rowe's late header extending the undefeated streak.

Explaining Johnson's nomination, the EFL wrote: "Forced to reinvent his side every autumn following summer sales, Johnson continues to defy expectations.

"This season’s version has begun with 11 points from six games, which included away victories at Hull and Derby."

Johnson has been nominated alongside Leeds' Marcelo Bielsa, Charlton Athletic's Lee Bowyer and Steve Cooper of Swansea City, who have guided their sides to third, second and first respectively.

Swansea and Charlton remain unbeaten, which is particularly impressive considering the Swans appointed relatively inexperienced coach Steve Cooper as manager in the summer and the Addicks were only promoted at the end of last season.

Cooper's side beat Leeds before the international pause to end the Whites' unbeaten run.
