After injury-filled first day of camp, ‘deflated’ Giants battling a ‘dark cloud’

The New York Giants were excited and optimistic when they arrived for the start of training camp earlier this week, but in a matter of 48 hours, the entire mood has changed and they’re now enduring several unexpected hardships.

During the team’s very first practice, the wide receiver depth took a major hit as Corey Coleman was lost for the season with a torn ACL, Sterling Shepard was lost for more than a month with a fractured thumb and Darius Slayton was sidelined with a hamstring injury.

For a team that has struggled for the better part of a decade, it didn’t take much to get them down again.

“Definitely a little deflated,” wide receiver Golden Tate told reporters today. “Our room is kind of going through it a little bit.”

Although he believes his hamstring injury is minor in the grand scheme of things, Slayton echoed Tate’s sentiments.

“It feels like there’s a dark cloud around us right now,” Slayton said.

Both Tate and Slayton expressed some optimism that the Giants could overcome the injuries, but the very last thing general manager Dave Gettleman & Co. want to hear from their players at this point in the season is that the team is “deflated” and feels as if there’s a “dark cloud” hovering above them.

The Giants already face tall odds to compete in a potentially franchise-defining season, so losing key players and then having the air escape the room is only going to make their battles in 2019 that much more difficult.
