Defining images of the decade: From mass protests to royal weddings, 75 key moments from the last ten years

The last decade has been punctuated with a myriad of unforgettable moments, many of which were captured in freeze frame by photographers across the globe.

In the political sphere, the start of the decade saw David Cameron take to office in Number 10, with iconic photographs capturing his coalition partner and deputy Nick Clegg at his side in Downing Street.

There was also Donald Trump's unexpected win in the US Presidential campaign, and latterly Boris Johnson's journey from backbencher to winning a historic general election as Prime Minister.

For the royals, there were a number of weddings, including Prince William marrying Kate, and Harry's nuptials to Meghan - with both couples later welcoming children into their families.

In sport, Mo Farah won double Olympic gold medals in the London games in 2012, with triumphs in the 10,000m and the 5,000m.

Tennis legend Andy Murray also saw victory at Wimbledon, while England lifted the Ashes and Usain Bolt cemented his dominance in world sprinting.

In another major feat in 2012, Felix Baumgartner jumped from the edge of space to earth.

Social movement also dominated the news agenda – with Extinction Rebellion’s mass protests making for striking images in 2019.

Greta Thunberg’s climate fight also saw her become one of the most recognisable faces on the planet, while Colin Kaepernick taking a knee at the start of an NFL game was also a landmark moment.

There were also moments of devastation and atrocity around the globe, reflected in heartbreaking images of refugees and children caught up amid fighting in war-torn areas, and disasters such as the Grenfell Tower fire closer to home.

There were also a number of terror incidents, including the Boston Marathon bombing and the Manchester Arena attack.

In the world of showbiz, Lady Gaga made headlines when she wore a dress made of meat to the MTV Video Music Awards in 2010.

Amy Winehouse's final concert, before her death in July 2011, was also caught on camera.

And arguably the most famous selfie in history - featuring Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep and Bradley Cooper - was taken in 2014 at the Oscars.
