Defiant Rangers fans united as they refuse to hit panic button in wake of £23.5m losses - Hotline

Rangers are counting the cost of Covid after announcing a whopping £23.5million loss last year.

But the Ibrox faithful calling the Hotline were putting a brave face on the latest accounts as they thanked Douglas Park’s board for vowing to cover the shortfall.

Steven Cooper said: “To be honest, I was bracing myself for worse given what the club has had to endure over the last year with the pandemic. Those losses don’t make for great reading but at least we have a set of directors willing to dig deep while the club completes its recovery.”

Gavin MacLeod , Renfrew, said: “Rangers latest accounts are worrying but not really unexpected as the failure to qualify for the Champions League will have blown a big hole in the current season’s budget already.

“It appears that the budgets of both halves of the Old Firm now utterly depend on reaching the Champions League or selling off the crown jewels.”

But Adam Thomson said: “So it looks like the much-hyped Castore deal is only worth £4m a season. And when you total up the countless other sponsorship arrangements Rangers have announced recently, it doesn’t look like they bring in much more. Quite underwhelming if you ask me.”

Gers will hope to raise a profit in the Europa League but they can’t bank on reaching the last 32 after another sub-par display in Copenhagen saw them settle for a point against Brondby.

James McClean, Rothesay, said: “Steven Gerrard went overboard about Fashion Sakala against a 10-man Motherwell, then substituted him against another poor team. Someone should tell Gerrard one swallow does not make a summer.”

Brian Quinn, Paisley, said: “I thought the Motherwell game was papering over the cracks as they matched us for half the game then fell apart. Brondby are the worst team I've seen in the Europa League and we should be beating them. This squad is fading fast in value and looking at today’s shocking accounts release its hard to see where we go from here.”

While Gers could only draw in Denmark, Celtic fought past Ferencvaros to claim a 3-2 win which guarantees they will be playing European football beyond Christmas.

Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton , said: “After yet another sparkling display from Celtic’s finest import since Henrik Larsson surely any thoughts of Kyogo Furuhashi being used sparingly will be shelved. It’s like Celtic have 12 men on the park when he starts and if he’s rested on the bench at Dens Park this weekend I fear more dropped points.”

Kenny Wilson, Moffat, added: “Another good result and mostly a very good performance in a game that should have been won by a much bigger margin with a lot less stress. Once again both goals we lost were our own doing with stupid mistakes. That has to stop if we want to win anything this season.”

Seamie Gallagher, Govan, added: “What a brilliant result and masterclass of attacking football Celtic served up in Budapest. That's over 50 goals we’ve scored since big Ange Postecoglou joined. He’s very under-rated but his class is there for all to see. It’s only a matter of time before he brings silverware with style back to Parkhead.”

Michael O’Leary, Glasgow, said: “What a great night for Scottish teams playing away in Europe. Celtic defeat the second placed team in Hungary and Rangers scrape a draw against the sixth best side in Denmark. Incidentally Brondby didn’t register a single shot on target in the 180 minutes against Rangers. If only Rangers could play against a team with 10 men every week.”

David Bryce, Troon, said: “Well done to Celtic, they were outstanding up until the three subs were introduced and then the level dropped dramatically.

“Tony Ralston, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Kyogo, Josip Juranovic and Nir Bitton were all superb. But once again Mikey Johnston is a headless chicken. God help us if the mercurial Kyogo gets injured because the back up to him is frankly woeful!”
