Defensive stop, Blewitt's game-winning field goal lift Pitt over Georgia Tech

PITTSBURGH _ Pitt rallied back to beat Georgia Tech, 37-34, on Saturday, keeping their ACC Coastal Division title hopes alive with a 31-yard field goal by Chris Blewitt as time expired.

The ball hit the right upright, but was still good.

It was the defense that came up with the play of the game Saturday, making a stop on fourth-and-1 at the Georgia Tech 34-yard line with 1:47 to play.

Defensive tackle Tyrique Jarrett and linebacker Matt Galambos combined to tackle running back Decrick Mills for no gain. After a short review, the play on the field stood.

Pitt improved to 4-2, and 1-1 in the ACC with the win, while Georgia Tech fell to 3-3, 1-3 in the conference.

The Panthers needed a big touchdown just a few minutes earlier.

Tight end Scott Orndoff caught a deflected 74-yard touchdown pass from Nate Peterman with 3:50 to play to tie the game, 34-34.

He got a little help from defensive back Corey Griffin, who got a hand on the pass, deflecting it into his hands.

Georgia Tech, which had trailed for most of the day, recovered a fourth-quarter fumble at the Pitt 39-yard line and scored seven plays later when J.J. Green ran in a 10-yard touchdown with 5:22 to play to take a 34-27 lead.

Quarterback Justin Thomas faked a handoff to his right, then pitched the ball to Green on his left, who ran in for the score that gave the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the day, 34-27 with just 5:22 to play.
