Defensive end Ezekiel Ansah medically cleared to play in season opener

The Seattle Seahawks closed out their preseason with a win against the Oakland Raiders and some promising news about the pass-rushing situation. Defensive end Ezekiel Ansah, who Seattle signed as a free agent, has finally been medically cleared to take to the field.

Ansah spent the offseason recovering from shoulder surgery only to be sidelined from a return with a groin injury. He resumed practice last week and is now on track to play in the season opener at CenturyLink Field.

“He went through pregame tonight, he practiced during the week, he’ll practice this next week and he’s ready to go,” coach Pete Carroll said in his postgame press conference. “The docs have given him the ready to go as long as he makes it through the days, so we’ll have a plan on how to do that. I’m thrilled. This is a guy we expected to come in and be a big factor for us. He plays really hard, he’s really a tough guy, and that kind of mentality coming along with the big ability that he has will fit really well, and we’ll put that together.”

Seattle can use all the help it can get on the defensive line with Frank Clark traded to the Chiefs and Jarran Reed suspended the first six games of the regular season.

The Seahawks have the next few days off and resume practice Monday afternoon following the 53-mam roster cuts.
