Defending World Cup of Darts champions Wales squeeze into quarter-finals

Defending champions Wales are the last team through to the World Cup of Darts quarter-finals after surviving a scare against Lithuania.

The match went down to a pairs decider in which Jonny Clayton and Gerwyn Price emerged victorious, despite needing a break to do so.

Price was first up against Mindaugas Barauskas, and the world champion won 4-2 with a 91 average.

Clayton looked to seal Wales’ place in the last eight but Darius Labanauskas levelled things up for Lithuania with a 4-2 success of his own.

The Welshman had a better average than his opponent – 95 compared to 88 – but Labanauskas was better on the doubles, with 66 per cent to Clayton’s lowly 28 per cent, and it proved decisive.

In the pairs decider, Price had the first chance to win it after going 3-2 up but missed match darts – as did Clayton.

It left them needing a break to stay in the competition but they got it to keep their hopes of retaining the title alive.
