Defending champion Medvedev withdraws from Rotterdam Open due to injury

Defending champion Daniil Medvedev has regretfully announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Rotterdam Open. The world number three cited fatigue and a right foot injury as the primary reasons for his decision. This comes just weeks after his grueling battle at the Australian Open, where he reached the final only to be defeated by Italian Jannik Sinner in a five-set thriller.

Medvedev's extraordinary performance at the Australian Open undoubtedly took a toll on his body. In fact, he set a Grand Slam record by spending an astounding 24 hours and 17 minutes on court at Melbourne Park. Such an intense and physically demanding campaign has left him with insufficient time to rest and recover adequately, particularly his persistently troublesome right foot.

Expressing his disappointment, Medvedev stated in a released statement, 'After an incredibly tough and long run in Australia, my body (and especially my right foot) is not recovered enough yet to come and defend my title.' Clearly disappointed to miss out on the opportunity to compete in Rotterdam, he added, 'I love playing in Rotterdam, have a long history with the event, and look forward to coming back in 2025.'

The absence of the defending champion undoubtedly leaves a void in the tournament. However, the Rotterdam Open will still showcase a noteworthy lineup of world-class players. Jannik Sinner, the man who defeated Medvedev in the Australian Open final, will now take the top seed position at the ATP 500 event. Alongside him, talented players such as Andrey Rublev, Holger Rune, and Hubert Hurkacz will also be vying for the title.

The Rotterdam Open, known for its thrilling matches and electric atmosphere, will take place from Feb. 12-18. Despite Medvedev's withdrawal, tennis fans can still expect a week packed with exceptional performances from the world's finest players.
