Defender training with League Two side after Nottingham Forest exit

Former Nottingham Forest defender Danny Preston is training with League Two side Forest Green Rovers.

The 21-year-old defender has been without a club since he was allowed to leave the City Ground earlier this summer.

Preston, who signed professional terms in August 2018 having been a scholar with the Reds, spent the first half of the 2020/21 season on-loan with Grimsby Town.

He started 24 times and made three appearances from the substitute's bench in all competitions before returning to Forest in February 2021.

According to GloucestershireLive, Preston has been training with Forest Green Rovers and played 90 minutes as a trialist in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Brentford B on Tuesday, September 7.

The full-back, who has been a long-term target for Forest Green, started on the left side of a back three in the League Two side's 0-0 draw.

Preston captained the Under-23s a number of times but never made a first-team appearance for the Reds. His first taste of senior football came as a loanee with National League North outfit Alfreton Town in the 2019/20 season.

A spokesperson for Forest Green Rovers told GloucestershireLive: "Danny Preston featured in the Brentford game - and is training with the club while staff look at his progress."
