Defender released by Nottingham Forest seals shock Spanish move

Former Nottingham Forest defender Roger Riera has sealed a move  to Barcelona's B team from NAC Breda.

Riera had joined Forest's youth set-up in 2014 when he signed a two-year contract with the club, but never went on to make a first-team appearance for the club.

He was released in January 2016 when his contract was terminated and went on to join Celta Vigo B and then went on to move to Villareal B's side where he made 63 appearances.

Eventually NAC Breda made their move for the 23-year-old, but his impressive performances for the Dutch side have now landed him a return to Barcelona albeit he will play for their B side.

Riera had been  captain at youth level for Barcelona in the early stages of his career but the Spanish giants do have a defensive crisis so an appearance for the first team is not beyond the realms of possibilty.

During his time at Forest, Riera had impressed in several pre-season friendlies but didn’t manage to force his way into the first-team picture.

But reflecting on  his decision to move to Forest at the time, he said: “I wanted to live a new experience and I couldn’t have had a better chance. Nottingham Forest is a big club that helped me a lot to keep progressing as a footballer.

“The first season I spent at Forest was really good. We won our Under-21 league and I played a lot of games that helped me to progress.

“The second season I started the pre-season and the first bit of the season with the first team and I was involved with them, but I never had the chance to play with the first team. Then it was when I decided to move in January.”
