Defenceless pensioner punched twice in face by thug

A thug punched a defenceless pensioner in the face outside a town centre bar.

Merseyside Police has issued a CCTV image of a man they hope can assist with their enquiries after a 71-year-old man was assaulted in St Helens. Police received a report that a man had been punched twice in the face on Westfield Street at around 8.20pm on Saturday, November 12.

The victim was standing outside a bar when he was approached by an unknown man who punched him twice in the face, causing an injury to his nose. The suspect then left the scene on foot.

Merseyside Police said since the incident officers have carried out a thorough investigation and analysed CCTV footage to identify anyone responsible. The force has now released a CCTV image of a man who officers think may have information.

Detective Inspector James Rotheram said: "This was a nasty and completely unprovoked attack on an innocent man. We think the male pictured in the CCTV image may have vital information to help our enquiries and although the quality of the image may not be as clear as we would like, we hope that it could trigger someone’s memory.

"If you recognise this man, or this image reminds you of anything suspicious you saw at around 8.20pm on Saturday 12 November on Westfield Street, please do let us know."
