Defenceless man was pummelled on floor of pub

A man pummelled someone as he lay defenceless on the floor of a Portishead pub.

David Hewitt got involved as trouble flared in the Old Mill, Bristol Crown Court heard.

The court heard he punched Greg Whittle some eight to nine times after he fell down.

Hewitt, 36, of Glenwood Rise in Portishead, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm on August 26, 2019.

The recorder Mr Neil Millard handed him a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.

He told Hewitt: "Mr Hewitt, this was a nasty assault.

"You attacked a man on the ground, unable to defend himself."

Hewitt was told to carry out 200 hours' unpaid work and ordered to pay Mr Whittle £1,275 compensation and £400 court costs.

James Haskell, prosecuting, said trouble flared between two men and Hewitt and his friend.

It was after Mr Whittle tried to act as a peacemaker that he went to the floor and Hewitt was seen to rain blows on him.

As a result Mr Whittle sustained two black eyes, a fractured nose and a fractured left eye socket.

Hewitt's friend was fined for causing criminal damage.

Kevin Hopper, defending Hewitt, said: "He is deeply ashamed of himself.

"He is genuinely remorseful."

Mr Hopper said it was the complainant and his friend who approached Hewitt, who was not involved in an initial altercation.

The court heard Hewitt was in work, had good references and he and his partner are about to have their first child.
