Defence off limits?

With 19 government ministries up for grabs by coalition partners and many of the lucrative ones already taken, I ask myself the question. Why has no coalition partner asked for the defence ministry?

After all isn't this ministry the one with one of the highest budget allocation?

Or is the case that this ministry is off limits and can only be managed by people with experience of soldiering?

When pigs take over

Re: "Activists face chilling threat", (Editorial, June 5).

The latest violence against human rights workers is but another symptom of the "peace" and "reconciliation" promised by the Orwell-loving Napoleon when he overthrew democracy to save it.

The dictator has since exemplified the same use of intolerant force to "solve" his problems.

But after five years, could anything else be expected from such incredibly "good" selfless pigs as Napoleon and his growing horde backed up by his loyal dogs rewarded with milk and apples stolen from the hardworking Benjamin, Boxer, Clover, hens and other actual producers of the nation downtrodden by the pigs who make up the law to selflessly serve themselves as they collaterally grow ever fatter?

Blame it on Brexit

Mr Corrigan's complaint in his June 5 letter about the rise in the baht and somehow blaming the Thai central bank is quite disingenuous.

The problem isn't baht appreciation, it's sterling weakness as a direct result of the Brexit vote in 2016.

The euro/baht rate has been quite stable for the past few years.

In the same period the pound has lost 30% against the euro, dollar and most major currencies.

Mr Corrigan should direct his complaint to the readers of the Daily Mail et al in the UK.

Immigration blues

Although my observations here are not scientific it seems to me that every expat I've been talking to has either left Thailand, is planning to or is thinking about it.

A bar owner asked me why the Immigration Department is driving out the expats when doing so is destroying her business. She's going broke. My only explanation is that Immigration hates us far more than they care about their own people.

Big step forward

Bravo and thank you, Tesco-Lotus Prachin Buri for reintroducing paper grocery bags. I did a double-take this morning when I saw them. We have returned full cycle to the 1980s.

It transported me back to the 80s where my local Loblaw's supermarket on St Clair Avenue in Toronto used paper bags exclusively. At that time we also carried our own cloth shopping bags.

I hope all of Thailand takes its lead from Lotus. I'm tired of smelling my neighbour's burning plastic in her garbage, a disgusting habit because she is too lazy to use a public bin or cart her trash to the roadside.
