The Australian Defence Force has confirmed a young Australian soldier has died two-and-a-half weeks after collapsing during a training exercise in Darwin.

A spokeswoman from St John Ambulance said paramedics were called to East Point on the morning of March 8 following a report that the 20-year-old had collapsed from heat exhaustion.

Soldiers administered first aid before the man was taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition.

The ABC has been told he had a pre-existing medical condition.

A Defence spokesperson confirmed he died on Thursday after being in a coma.

The spokesperson said the cause of death was yet to be determined and said Defence investigations were continuing.

"We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends, and are providing ongoing welfare support at this difficult time," the spokesperson wrote in a statement.

"While Defence is investigating, the cause of death is yet to be determined by the coroner, therefore it is not appropriate for us to discuss the matter further at this time.

"Out of respect for the family, Defence will not be releasing any further information regarding the soldier's personal or service details."

The man was a member of the 5th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment.

The spokesperson said Defence was also aware of the reported death of a former soldier earlier this month on March 12.

"We extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends," they said.

"As they were not a serving soldier at the time of death, Defence cannot investigate."
