Defence assists at Moruya plane crash during parachuting championships

A plane crashed just short of the runway at Moruya Airport at about 1pm on Thursday, December 19.

Australian Defence Force members provided first aid to two people seriously hurt in a plane crash at Moruya Airport on Thursday, December 19.

Defence confirmed Australian Defence Force members provided assistance to civilian emergency services following the crash.

A spokesperson said the Australian Defence Force members were taking part in the Military National Parachuting Championships, which was being held on December 16-20.

Forty-eight military members were taking part in the championships, and the incident was not related to any Defence or parachuting activity.

The spokesperson said Defence was unable to comment further as the matter was under investigation by NSW Police.

NSW Police said a man and woman onboard suffered "non-life threatening" head and leg injuries and were taken to hospital.

It was understood the pilot made a mayday call as the craft was coming into land, which was picked up by another aircraft.
