Defaced Banksy artwork to be restored by experts

A Banksy artwork that was defaced shortly after its appearance is to be restored to its former glory by experts.

The artwork, which is untitled, first appeared in January 2018 on the side of a disused drawbridge in Hull. Two days after Banksy confirmed it was his, it had been painted over.

Now, Hull City Council is sending it to experts to be restored, Hull Live reports.

"The Banksy will be sent to an expert restorer in two weeks, and then will be returned for display after the restoration work is complete," Hull City Council told the website.

It's not yet clear where in the city the artwork will be displayed.

It had been painted on the Scott Street Bridge, which was built 120 years ago but has been out of action since it was closed in 1994 due to structural problems. The two sides of it were left permanently raised in an upright position, hence Banksy's caption, "Draw the raised bridge!"

The artwork was removed from the bridge in October 2019, ahead of the bridge itself being torn down last year.

In a separate incident in Reading, a more recent Banksy piece, Create Escape, was vandalised by supporters of a late local artist, before being restored by a third artist.
