Melbourne have had an early win in AFL grand-final week, with Simon Goodwin named senior coach of the year by the league's coaches association.
Goodwin entered 2021 under extreme pressure but has spearheaded the Demons' remarkable rise, steering them to within one win of breaking a 57-year premiership hoodoo.
The minor premiers meet the Western Bulldogs in the season decider at Optus Stadium on Saturday night.
It comes after the Demons' horror 2019 campaign, when they won just five games off the back of a preliminary-final appearance, and another disappointing season last year when they finished ninth.
Goodwin won the AFLCA award - named after AFL/VFL great Allan Jeans - with 258 votes ahead of grand-final opponent Luke Beveridge (193) and GWS mentor Leon Cameron (84).
"Although it's an individual accolade, ultimately it reflects the efforts of our entire footy club," Goodwin said.
"It's an acknowledgment of the hard work and character of our entire football department and playing list.
"It is the sum of all parts that come together to create a strong football club and I certainly wouldn't be receiving this award without the support and assistance of everyone who plays a role at the Melbourne Football Club."
Goodwin's accolade completed an AFLCA double for Melbourne, with hard-nosed midfielder Clayton Oliver recently named champion player of the year for 2021.
