Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has now revealed that the Iran Government was behind at least two attacks targeting Australia’s Jewish community.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Prime Minister said that the Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation had “credible intelligence” confirming that the Iranian government was responsible for the attacks on Melbourne’s Adass Israel Synagogue in December 2024 and Sydney’s Lewis’ Continental Kitchen in October 2024.
“It is likely Iran directed further attacks as well. These were extraordinary and dangerous acts of aggression orchestrated by a foreign nation on Australian soil,” Albanese said.
“They were attempts to undermine social cohesion, and so discord in our community. It is totally unacceptable. The Australian government is taking strong and decisive action in response.”

He also confirmed that Australia had expelled Iranian ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi and shut down its embassy in Tehran, with diplomats previously posted there being reassigned to others countries.
The government will soon legislate to list Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp as a terrorist organisation.
ASIO chief Mike Burgess indicated that the Iranian government had probably orchestrated more than just the two attacks.
Burgess claims Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had used “a complex web of proxies” to shield its involvement in antisemitic attacks across Australia.
While Burgess does not believe Iran was responsible for all antisemitic attacks in Australia, he said they may have been behind more than the two aforementioned attacks.
“We have investigated dozens of incidents,” Burgess said. “ASIO now assesses the Iranian government directed at least two and likely more attacks on Jewish interests in Australia.
“Our painstaking investigation uncovered and unpicked the links between the alleged crimes and the commanders in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, the IRGC.
“It goes without saying that Iran’s actions are utterly unacceptable. They put lives at risk. They terrified the community, and they tore at our social fabric. Iran and its proxies literally and figuratively, lit the matches and fanned the flames. I want to assure all Australians that ASIO and our law enforcement partners take these matters extremely seriously.”
