'Deepest condolences' - Celtic issue statement after death of Pope Francis

Celtic have issued a statement after the death of Pope Francis.

The Vatican confirmed that the Pope passed away at the age of 88 on Easter Monday.

He had been struggling with health issues but appeared on Easter Sunday to bless thousands gathered in St Peter's Square.

However, Pope Francis passed away the following morning at 7.35am on Monday.

A statement from the Vatican said: "Dearest brothers and sister, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. 

"At 7.35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the father. 

"His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and his Church.

“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love, especially for the poorest and most marginalised.

“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite, merciful love of God, One and Tribune.″

Now, Celtic officials have expressed "deepest condolences" following the death of Pope Francis.

A Celtic statement read: "Celtic Football Club would like to express its deepest condolences following the death of Pope Francis who has passed away this morning at the age of 88.

"Everyone at the club is saddened by this morning's news and we offer our sincere thoughts and prayers.

"Requiescat in pace."
