The title, of course, is a come-on. This is not a stage recreation of the celebrated 1972 blue movie about a woman, played by Linda Lovelace, whose clitoris was supposedly located in her throat. Even the Edinburgh fringe might gag at that. Instead this two-hander follows the careers of Lovelace - who moved from porn star to feminist icon when she accused her former husband of beating her and forcing her to make Deep Throat - and co-star Harry Reems, a failed classical actor.
Unfortunately, Simon Garfield's show, narrated by Alex Lowe as the seedy Reems, is not informative enough to score as documentary and not funny enough to count as comedy. Garfield and Lowe have created similar shows to this, most notably on the world of wrestling and on the back-stabbing behind the microphones at Radio 1. But Deep Throat never successfully finds a way to explore dramatically the cultural and social significance of a film whose title has entered the language. Most damagingly, the show never treats Lovelace seriously or attempts to explore the complexities of her life. Lovelace died in a car crash last April. It seems she is still being sexploited after death.
