Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon: Meet Frances Murray from the Experiment 26.2 team

Each week we will feature one of the ambassadors from the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon Experiment 26.2 team.

The group consists of 15 people who will be taking on the challenge of running a marathon for the first time on Sunday May 3, 2020.

Name: Frances Murray

Tell us a little about yourself:

I’m honoured to be Belfast City Council’s ambassador and participate in the 2020 Experiment 26.2 Group.  I’ve worked in council for 16 years and looking forward to running my first marathon in my hometown.

What inspired you to take on this challenge?

I love a physical challenge and having a goal to work towards – I feel disorientated without one. The Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon is the perfect opportunity to combine that with fundraising. All of us in the Group are running for Cancer Focus Northern Ireland and that’s a cause very close to my heart.

Were you an active person before you signed up?

I love being outdoors and am a member of my local triathlon club – Brown Shoes. We founded the club last year, but I’ve never ran so much in my life!

Longest run to date: Half Marathon

What has been the biggest struggle so far?

I frequently get stitches so working on hydration whilst running and getting to the root of their cause.

What are you enjoying?

The support from all involved in Experiment 26.2 and having friends, family and work colleagues who believe in me.  That and when you turn a corner and the winds on your back!

What kind of things do you think about when you’re running?

I’m a nosey runner – taking in my surroundings and the environment. I’ve also found that once I’m out I focus on the positives of running and have started to like the sport.

Do you think you’ll keep up the running after race day?

Definitely – I’ve learned so much through the experience thus far. I will approach running much more positively now and not just a means to finish a race.

Has your diet changed?

I’m trying to eat more healthily and avoid snacking on sugary foods.

What’s the first thing you’re going to do after the marathon?

Stop the Garmin, have a good look at that medal and thank all those who’ve transformed the dream into a reality and supported me (emotionally and through sponsorship).
