Deep Purple have seen 'very little' of £1.2bn record sales from 50-year career

Deep Purple have seen “very little” of the £1.2billion they reckon they generated in record sales.

It comes two months after a former accountant, who stole more than £2million from the band, was jailed for six years.

In April, Dipak Rao, a director of the group’s accounts, was jailed for six years for siphoning off the band’s funds.

But the group believe they have been victims to more crooks over their 50-year career.

“When you think about it, we sold about 120 million records,” says singer Ian Gillan.

“Which relates to about £1.2billion in the UK economy. We’ve seen very little of that.”

And drummer Ian Paice added: “We’re not the first and we won’t be the last to be misserved by the people we trusted to look after things.

“It’s sad but it’s the world we live in. Somebody else’s money is always easier to play with. Justice has been served… or has it?”

Gillan added of Dipak: “He’s going to do a couple of easy years and then retire to enjoy his spoils. I take no joy in the fact that he’s in jail.

“But it’s karma.”
