Dedryck Boyata may not play for Celtic again as Neil Lennon fears serious injury

Dedryck Boyata may have played his last game for Celtic.

The Belgian defender limped out of the weekend Old Firm victory over Rangers with a hamstring injury and boss Neil Lennon has confessed the problem may be severe.

Boyata’s contract expires at the end of the season and, with just seven weeks to go before the campaign is over, the centre-back may not be back for the conclusion.

The extent of the centre-back’s issue will be fully uncovered when the result of scans come through, but Lennon reckons it’s a serious setback and might end the stopper’s season.

Boyata has shown no signs of agreeing a new deal and, when asked if his stopper’s season might be over, Lennon said: “Possibly. He felt it [hamstring] rip. He played on having felt a twinge and then he felt a rip five minutes later.

“Again, we’ll have to wait and see, but it’s a blow because he’s been absolutely brilliant.”

Boyata is expected to get scan results in the next 48 hours, but, if the news is bad, he’ll be long odds to return before the season's finale.

Lennon has other walking wounded around the squad, but said: “We just have to keep going. We have St Mirren on Wednesday and a [Scottish Cup] semi-final coming up.

“St Mirren had a great win at the weekend and then we’ve got Livingston at home.

“We know what’s at stake to win the league. Three more wins will do it, so that’s the focus. To try and get it done as quickly as possible.

“It would be great if we could and we have to assess the squad as there are a few injuries, and fresh injuries as well.”
