Dedryck Boyata blasted by manager as former Celtic star defies Hertha Berlin command with terrible consequences

Ex-Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata has been slammed by his own manager for playing for Belgium against Hertha Berlin's wishes and picking up a season-ending injury.

The solid stopper moved to Germany on a Bosman when his contract at Parkhead expired in 2019.

He's been suffering with a metatarsal injury picked up just before Christmas and has only just returned to training.

He accepted a call-up for Belgium for their World Cup qualifiers, despite Hertha Berlin publicly making it clear they wanted him to turn down the invitation.

He then played for 45 minutes in Belgium's 8-0 romp against Belarus.

But he tore a hamstring in training two days later and will now be out for the rest of the season... just as Hertha gear up for their relegation battle to stay in the Bundesliga.

Hertha manager Pal Dardai admits he's far from amused at Boyata.

He said: "When a player doesn't do anything for three months and then goes out to play for 45 minutes, things like that do happen.

"His body wasn't prepared for it all."

Boyata won eight trophies during his spell in Glasgow's East End after a move from Manchester City.
