Dedication of East Kilbride food bank stalwarts recognised in parliaments

The tireless work of East Kilbride food bank stalwarts has been recognised in both Holyrood and Westminster.

Denis and Cathie Curran announced their planned retirement from Loaves and Fishes this year.

They had planned to retire several years ago but were unable to walk away from those who needed them the most.

And now MSP Collette Stevenson and MP Dr Lisa Cameron have praised their dedication to some of the most vulnerable in East Kilbride and beyond.

The motion to the Scottish Parliament reads: "The Parliament wishes Denis Curran MBE and his wife, Cathie, all the best for the future as they plan to retire from the Loaves and Fishes food bank, in which they have been involved for almost 30 years; applauds their hard work and dedication as they have helped thousands of hungry families over the years."

It goes on to say it wishes them both a long and happy retirement with the hope that, one day, "their dream will be realised and there will no longer be a need for foodbanks".

Meanwhile, Dr Cameron's Early Day Motion (EDM) to Westminster reads: "That this house pays tribute to Denis Curran MBE and his wife Cathie after they recently announced their retirement from the Loaves and Fishes food bank in East Kilbride after nearly 30 years of service to the most vulnerable and in need in the local East Kilbride community; draws particular attention to their life’s work in providing support and care for those who had nowhere else to turn and their tireless commitment to speaking truth to power on behalf of those who are voiceless."

The EDM also thanks all the volunteers and members of the local community who give their time and resources to support Loaves and Fishes and calls on the Government to ensure that future generations grow up in a place where the need for foodbanks no longer exists.

Denis and Cathie confirmed recently that they would step down by the end of the year - hopeful that a strong team of volunteers are in place to continue their work.

"Loaves and Fishes has been our life for the last 29 years and as heart-wrenching as it is myself and Cathie have taken the difficult decision to resign at the end of the year," 78-year-old Denis told Lanarkshire Live.

"Nothing is forever and as hard as it will be we have to look after ourselves at our age too.

"Our health hasn't been great and we need to step back."

Leading anti-poverty campaigner Denis made an impassioned plea to a Scottish Parliament committee in 2014 to end the need for foodbanks which went viral.
