Dedicated schoolgirl sets gold standard with Brownies award

A Lanarkshire girl proved she had the golden touch as she achieved the highest award available in Brownies.

Melissa Croft completed the Brownie Gold award at the 1st Cambuslang Brownies, earning the honour after completing Girlguiding's six theme awards, followed by a final challenge.

The Park View Primary pupil was the first in her unit to achieve the honour, and mum Kirsty was delighted by her daughter's hard work and dedication.

She told Lanarkshire Live: "The Brownies have been brilliant throughout lockdown, as they've carried on and kept going with things like Zoom calls.

"Melissa has really enjoyed being part of them, and she was keen to get her badges, so worked really hard to achieve it.

"The two leaders, Marcella Campbell and Clair Brown, are exceptional at motivating the girls and have made it a lot of fun for Melissa and the other girls."

Brownies can earn their Gold award by completing all six of their section's theme awards, which are Know Myself, Express Myself, Be Well, Have Adventures, Take Action, and Skills for my Future.

Melissa, 10, said her favourite was the Take Action theme, which she accomplished by working on activities including the Zero Waste interest badge.

She said: "It showed how much rubbish we use, and how many things get wasted - we looked at a lot of stuff as part of that, so that was really good fun."

Melissa is now set to move up to Guides, and Kirsty added that the Brownies have had a fantastic impact during the past year when so much has been shut down during the pandemic.

She said: "They really gave her a focus during the past year. Both her dad and I are key workers so she has had so much disruption with school and whether she's in class or out, so having the Brownies on the go every week has been a big help.

"I have to take my hat off to them, because they did so much. "
