'Dedicated and caring family man' found dead by mother on his daughter's birthday

A 'caring and dedicated family man' was discovered in his bedroom on the day he was due to celebrate his daughter's birthday.

Jamie Sloots had planned to give his daughter Skye a computer for her birthday when he was found by his mother Ann at his home at Flint House on Moorland Road in Aberavon, Port Talbot, on April 11 last year.

He was aged just 40.

An inquest into his death held at Swansea's Guildhall heard Mr Sloots would work long hours during the week in his job at Visor Tempered Glass to be able to spend time with his daughter on weekends.

PC Charlotte Stephenson told the inquest: "He adored his daughter and she was his priority in life. His dedication to her and his family meant he did not have time to find his own long-term companion."

The inquest was told Mr Sloots did not enjoy going out socialising, but would drink beer in his house, and had received medication due to depression. It also heard that if he had felt depressed he would speak with his sister, to whom he was close, who would comfort him.

On the day before he was discovered he had been for a drive with his nephews to Porthcawl, during which he had stopped at his work place and returned to his car with a packet of capsules.

Around 8am the following morning his mother Ann heard a bang from his bedroom and gone to discover him on his knees on the floor, struggling to breath.

She told him to get back into bed, but when she returned later that morning she realised he was unresponsive and sought help from a neighbour. Emergency services were called, but paramedics were unable to assist.

A post mortem report revealed his cause of death as diazepam and etizolam toxicity - tests revealed he had six nanograms per millilitre of diazepam and 89 nanograms per millilitre of etizolam.

Assistant coroner Aled Gruffydd said: "There is no evidence he made attempts on his own life and his family can't recall any such events.

"He suffered from depression but if he did on occasion he would contact his sister. It appears there is a strong protective factor with his family and in particular his daughter".

He concluded his death was due to an unintentional overdose which had resulted in a drug-related death.
