Decrease in crime across Glasgow during coronavirus lockdown confirmed by police figures

Police figures show a fall in crime across Glasgow during the coronavirus lockdown.

The response to a Freedom of Information request submitted by Glasgow Live reveals a year-on-year decrease in crime during the height of lockdown in April this year.

In April 2020, a total of 5,962 crimes were recorded by Police Scotland in the Glasgow city area, in comparison to 7,001 in April 2019, a fall of almost 15%.

There were 20 fewer serious assaults this April (54 versus 74), while domestic abuse cases also fell (15 versus 20).

The number of housebreakings halved (61 versus 122), as did vandalism (439 versus 649), however there was an increase in break-ins to non-residential properties (103 versus 75).

Furthermore, statistics show a substantial jump in crime recorded concerning the carrying of offensive weapons, from 25 in April 2019 to 54 in April 2020.

Figures also show a marginal increase in possession of drugs (508 versus 498, year-on-year).
