Thane: Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik has appealed to CM Eknath Shinde to seek that dahi handi be declared a sport in the state which, he said, could help thousands of govindas pursuing the tradition get proper employment under the sports quota.
Sarnaik made the appeal while announcing his dahi handi celebrations that will see a prize of Rs 21 lakh for the troupe that breaks the previous record of a nine-tier human pyramid.
The demand for declaring dahi handi as a sport comes close on the heels of Shinde approving Sarnaik’s request for declaring the festival a public holiday. Sarnaik’s son Purvesh said they are taking all efforts to follow all guidelines set by the court and ensuring the overall safety of govindas.
