Declan Rice gives verdict on penalty Manchester United's Luke Shaw gave away in England vs Hungary

Declan Rice believes the penalty that Luke Shaw gave away in England's draw with Hungary on Tuesday was correct, even if the fouled player made a meal of it.

England dropped points for the second time in their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign at Wembley as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Hungary.

After the Three Lions won the reverse fixture 4-0 in Budapest last month a win looked likely but the Hungarians took the lead in the first-half from the penalty spot.

Manchester United left-back Shaw was penalised for a high foot on Loic Nego and Rolland Sallai converted from 12 yards.

John Stones levelled the match shortly afterwards as he turned in Phil Foden's excellent free-kick delivery but, despite all their dominance, England couldn't find a winner.

Afterwards, midfielder Rice was asked for his view on the penalty, which he concedes the referee was right to give.

"Look, when you put your foot up that high - the way he went down was a bit pathetic if I’m being honest, he’s holding his head - if you put your foot up like that now it’s a penalty but I’m going to say it’s not," Rice told ITV.

Rice also insisted the opponents deserved credit for their resolute performance rather than necessarily it being a poor England display.

"You can say it’s poor because we drew the game but we dominated," he added. "Silly penalty to give away, had to keep our heads, keep playing but we just couldn’t find that killing touch at the end to get the win.

"You sometimes have to give credit to how to opposition set-up, Hungary were much better than they were when we played them away they were really tight, compact, worked hard when you play against low-blocks it’s hard for our attacking players to create stuff but still think we done enough to win the game."
