Declan Rice delighted with West Ham winner vs Arsenal: 'I can't put it into words!'

Declan Rice was lost for words as West Ham's rising star revealed his delight at scoring the match-winning goal in Saturday's London derby against Arsenal.

The 19-year-old midfielder struck his first senior goal early in the second half to condemn Arsenal, who left Mesut Ozil out of their squad, to a 1-0 loss - their fifth defeat of the season.

Marko Arnautovic was in the West Ham side despite having his head turned by the Chinese, but in the end it was Rice who delivered at London Stadium.

Rice revealed his team-mates had been encouraging him to take his chances in front of goal, with the teenager - who could not stop smiling during his post-match interview with Sky Sports - saying: "I can't put it into words.

"All the lads keep on at me to shoot, but I pick a pass.

"I thought, 'why not take it on', and it went in the top corner.

"I have been getting myself into the box more and getting closer, I was gutted I missed the header just before half-time, but then managed to get the only goal of the game in a win over Arsenal."

West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini believes Rice is becoming the "complete player".

"He is improving in every game," Pellegrini said on Sky Sports.

"He has showed good technique and good in aerial duels, I think we are seeing the complete player.

"At 19 years old, I am sure we will see a top, top player."

Pellegrini added: "I am pleased with the consistency. We played with the mentality of a big team, so I am happy for all of that."
